How to Live With Less

Did you know that visible mess and clutter distracts you and adds to your emotional stress? When I help my clients purge and sort a room, then only put back what they actually love and use, it’s life changing for them. I can see the stress physically disappear and I feel good leaving them with systems that are set up to work. When was the last time you did a good purge?

One of my favorite go to organizers is Marie Kondo. She understands the art of living with less and that’s why I am so happy to introduce the new KonMarie line at The Container Store. I love her thoughtful way of using long lasting and sustainable materials like bamboo, ceramic, recycled fiberboard, and cotton. Let me show you a space I designed using these beautiful new products.

The KonMari line exudes calmness while elevating the look and feel of your closet. Here I used the Divided Bamboo Hamper paired with two stacking Shoe Shelves. I used two of the coordinating Shoji Bamboo Bins to hold sheets and extra bath tissue, and added a Calm Hidiki Organizer Box for scarves.

The Linen Jewelry Box is beautifully designed with inserts and sections to keep your most loved pieces. It coordinates so beautifully with the Bamboo Drawer Insert Boxes. Again, when you only keep what you love and use, your treasures will be on display and not lost deep in a drawer.

And lastly I used the Bamboo Shirt and Pant Hangers to finish the space. Keeping a minimal wardrobe allows you to purchase nicer pieces that will last longer. Learn to mix and match to create many outfits. It’s so freeing. A few years ago I went on a spending freeze for clothing. I purged my closet to see what I actually wore and was surprised that what was left were just a handful of pieces I actually felt good in. I decided to live with just those pieces and was less resistant to bring anything into my closet unless I had thought long and hard about it. Three years later, I now wear everything in my closet. No more waste.

Use these tips if you’re ready to live with less:

  1. Take everything out of your closet. Yes, everything. Try everything on, how does it make you feel. Do you love it? Would you buy it today? OK, it stays. Say thank you and goodbye to the rest.

  2. Now choose beautiful organizational items to store your clothing. All matching hangers, and coordinating bins make your space aesthetically pleasing. Make sure you have breathing room to see everything.

3. Go on a spending freeze. Wear what you have and when it is time to replace it, use the one in, one out rule.

4. Enjoy your clutter freedom.
